"Endangered sociability" (the original german title: "Gefährdete Geselligkeit") - this is how Andrea Rottmann describes the queer nightlife in West Berlin between 1945 and 1970 in her recently published essay in the volume "Spaces of German History", the Tel Aviv yearbook for German history 2021 edited by Teresa Walch, Sagi Schaefer and Galili Shahar. Using sources from the police and administration, the press, but also the memories of gay men, she measures the space of queer bars between post-war freedom, the building of the Wall and the beginning of a change in the 1960s.
