A Queer New York, A Queer Berlin - Lecture by Jen Jack Gieseking (23.06.2022)
Our event "A Queer New York - A Queer Berlin. Geographies of Lesbians, Dykes, and Queers." Lecture and Discussion with Jen Jack Gieseking, Andrea Rottmann, Martin Lücke, and Benno Gammerl" took place on June 23, 2022 in Berlin at the Freie Universität.
Jen Jack Gieseking‘s book A Queer New York: Geographies of Lesbians, Dykes, and Queers, 1983-2008 (NYU Press, 2020) is a historical geography of contemporary lesbian-queer society and economies in New York City. He draws upon in-person and online mixed methods with lesbians and queers, and archival research that spans the AIDS crisis to the appearance of The L Word television show. In this lecture, he presents his book and draws connections to Berlin‘s recent lesbian-queer geography and history. Andrea Rottmann, Martin Lücke and Benno Gammerl, coordinators of the DFG Network „Queer Contemporary Histories in German-Speaking Europe“ offered comments, followed by a lively audience discussion.
The event took place thanks to the kind support of the Dahlem Humanities Center.
